There are two things that I struggle with every time I go on a hunt: staying warm and staying full. I can bring the highest calorie snacks and meals on every adventure, but I can eat more than some grown men. I’ve got a handful of 215+ pound male references at my fingertips to back that statement!
With that being said, it seems like I came across some of the best snacks in 2019, so I feel the need to share this info while also admitting that I’m selfishly documenting it so that I can look back at this article when fall season approaches again. Many of these snacks I came across in my Backcountry Fuel Box that I receive each month. I highly recommend this subscription, and that’s coming from someone who isn’t a fan of subscriptions of any kind!
Wild Zora Foods: specifically their meat and veggie bar, as well as their fruit snacks.
Simply Fuel Protein Balls: I’m a fan of their top seller, Chocolate Coconut Peanut Butter.
Taos Bakes: Pecan Praline + Maple Syrup is a nice little sweet treat.
GOAT Bar: by ANION Outdoors, based in Oregon. This is in the top 5 best bars I’ve ever had, and it’s packed with quality ingredients. Will be available soon!
Bar-U-Eat: launching nationally soon and can be found all across Steamboat, Colorado! Great flavor and has more crunch to it than the others listed in this article.
Protein Puck: tough call on which is my preferred flavor, but I’m going to roll with the “Trailblazer,” the black wrapper!
Epic Meat Bars: Bison Bacon Cranberry or Chicken Sriracha are my go-to. I’m fully aware they sound gross, but I’ve confirmed that they’re wonderful. Also, I think it’s important to mention that I wasn’t a huge fan of the Venison Sea Salt Pepper flavor; it was a little too dry and salty in my opinion. However, I’m super sensitive to salt!
Heather’s Choice: give me all the packaroons!!
Olympia Provisions Pepperettes: I can’t remember which flavor I tried (I think flaco paco), I just know it 100% looked like I had a box of cigarettes on me.
Tahoe Trailbar: Mango Coconut was sooo good!
I’m constantly trying new snacks because I get so tired of peanut butter everything or just eating jerky nonstop in the field. I also like variety, so the bars listed above are kind of all over the place in terms of texture, ingredients, calorie breakdown, and sweetness. I’ll be the first to admit that I may be the worst person to take advice from when it comes to food because I’d put money that I’m the least picky eater alive. However, I do get bored easily (in every category, not just food) so I seek a diverse selection…preferably in large quantities! :)
It’s also important to note that I don’t recall seeing any of these snacks in mainstream stores next to Cliff Bars, Luna Bars, Power Crunch Bars, Quest, or any of the other popular brands. You gotta think outside of the box sometimes…unless it’s the Backcountry Fuel Box. See what I did there?
